Chapter Seventeen
It took a week to prepare to break into the head of the Protectors' house. The whole time, Aurie wondered if she'd gone completely mad, but the possibility that they might be able to restore Ashley and the other soul-husked students was reason enough to risk it.
They had a bit of luck when they found out that the Garbage Kings were playing the Glitterdome. They were a heavy metal band made of former Stone Singers and Oestomancers, whose shows were part freak circus and part Goth prom, drawing a heavy crowd of unqualified mages. The Garbage Kings had been banned in seventeen countries and twenty-six states due to earthquakes or other unnatural events that had originated in their stage shows. Last year, they'd summoned a minor demon into the crowd and let the wannabe mages battle it. Supposedly, the demon killed seven people before it was taken down, and another twenty were sent to the hospital for significant wounds or faez madness.
Thus, the impending illicit magic use required a larger than normal security detail from Blackstone Security, Bannon Creed's company. Pi had learned that Bannon always oversaw the security when Garbage Kings came to town because he was a huge fan, giving Aurie and her sister an opportunity at the book.
The Blue Line into the second ward was filled with crazies dressed in costumes on their way to the concert. Aurie nudged Pi, who had turned her hair bright red for the evening.
"What about that one?" she asked.
"The kid with the horns? Gotcha," said Pi.
Pi caught the kid's attention and smiled, drawing him in like a fly to honey. The kid wore skintight black transparent leather that creaked when he walked.
"Those real?" she asked.
"Do you like them?" he asked, rubbing the horns. "I did the spell all by myself."
"That's awesome," said Pi, chewing her gum loudly.
"Can you? You know," he said.
Pi put her hand on his arm. Aurie had to hide her face because she was about to burst out laughing. The kid looked like he was about to start humping her leg. Aurie didn't think he'd considered the repercussions of leather during a moment of excitement. He squirmed and shimmied in place.
"Only a little," she said, making a flame appear on her thumb as if it were a lighter.
"Cool," he said, eyes wide with amazement.
"Did you hear about the challenge?" she asked.
"Challenge?"
"Yeah, the Garbage Kings promised a free bone shifting for anyone that can get a picture of themselves doing magic, like anything you want, in front of some ugly-ass building made of glass and steel in the second ward," she said.
"Really? That would be amazing. I'd let them write their names in my bones if they wanted."
"Yeah, totally," she said, smacking the gum louder while pulling out her phone. "Anyway, gotta make a call."
Delirious with ideas, the kid wandered away. They moved to another car and repeated the story. Aurie split off from her sister, picking the less wildly dressed to entertain. They had to ride the same section of track for an hour before they started hearing the story repeated back to them.
